Dynamics of Ice Surfaces

چکیده
The dynamics of faceted and partially faceted single crystal and polycrystalline ice are reviewed with an emphasis on the manner in which microscopic effects produce macroscopic shapes. Our understanding of the former is rooted in the basic kinetics common to all materials and our pursuit of the latter is largely motivated by the striking patterns exhibited in the natural environment when water changes phase to become ice.

Distinct ice patterns on solid surfaces with various wettabilities.
No relationship has been established between surface wettability and ice growth patterns, although ice often forms on top of solid surfaces. Here, we report experimental observations obtained using a process specially designed to avoid the influence of nucleation and describe the wettability-dependent ice morphology on solid surfaces under atmospheric conditions and the discovery of two growth ...
متن کاملDynamics of ice nucleation on water repellent surfaces.
Prevention of ice accretion and adhesion on surfaces is relevant to many applications, leading to improved operation safety, increased energy efficiency, and cost reduction. Development of passive nonicing coatings is highly desirable, since current antiicing strategies are energy and cost intensive. Superhydrophobicity has been proposed as a lead passive nonicing strategy, yet the exact mechan...
متن کاملQuasi-liquid layers on ice crystal surfaces are made up of two different phases.
Ice plays crucially important roles in various phenomena because of its abundance on Earth. However, revealing the dynamic behavior of quasi-liquid layers (QLLs), which governs the surface properties of ice crystals at temperatures near the melting point, remains an experimental challenge. Here we show that two types of QLL phases appear that exhibit different morphologies and dynamics. We dire...
متن کاملScanning electron microscopy and molecular dynamics of surfaces of growing and ablating hexagonal ice crystals
We present the first clearly resolved observations of surfaces of growing and ablating hexagonal ice crystals using variable-pressure scanning electron microscopy. The ice surface develops trans-prismatic strands, separated from one another by distances of 5–10 μm. The strands are present at a wide range of supersaturations, but are most pronounced at temperatures near the frost point. Pyramida...
متن کاملDynamics at Surfaces : Probing the Dynamics of Polar and A-Polar Liquids at Silica and Vapour Surfaces
Recent studies by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Neutron Scattering of the dynamics and phase-fractions of water/ice systems in templated porous silicas (SBA-15) indicate that what was believed to be a non-frozen surface water layer is actually plastic ice, the quantity varying (continuously and reversibly) with temperature, and converting to a brittle (mainly cubic) ice at lower temperatures. ...
